LINDELL

Gabrielle Soyer, the designer behind LINDELL,
combines her Scandinavian sensibility with a profound knowledge of materials and traditional manufacturing techniques.
Spending much of the year traveling through northern India and Nepal,
she translates her refined aesthetic experiences into her design language.
Each piece is meticulously handcrafted by skilled local artisans she has met during her journeys—
through processes of embroidery, weaving, and dyeing, all carried out with care and precision.
The result is a collection imbued with texture, warmth, and the quiet presence of human touch.

LINDELL’s cushions feature Aari embroidery, a traditional handcraft from the Kashmir region of India.
The word “Aari” comes from Hindi, meaning “hook,”
and refers to a special hooked needle mounted on a wooden handle used to embroider intricate patterns by hand.
Unlike machine embroidery, Aari embroidery does not require the fabric to be stretched tightly.
Artisans adjust the tension and depth of each stitch according to the fabric’s thickness,
resulting in a soft, supple texture and a natural matte finish that complements the base material.
The embroidery blends seamlessly with the cloth, avoiding the stiffness and artificial sheen often found in mechanical stitching.
This technique gained popularity in 18th-century Europe,
where many French and British maisons adopted Aari embroidery in their creations.
Over time, the craft evolved, integrating into European traditions and aesthetics.

One of Aari embroidery’s distinctive qualities is its versatility—
the ability to combine different threads or materials within a single stitch,
allowing artisans to intuitively adjust color and composition while working directly on the fabric’s surface.
This spontaneous, organic process lies at the heart of LINDELL’s work,
where craft, intuition, and artistic expression intertwine to create truly one-of-a-kind textiles.
